Housing
Housing - At least 12,000 low-income South Carolinians diagnosed as mentally ill are in need of housing in South Carolina. To meet this need, MHASC created Turnkey Housing Corp., an arm of the organization that develops housing, especially in rural areas. The housing staff works with the local community to design housing that best fits the needs of consumers and may use federal, state and private funding sources for construction. MHASC and its affiliates are the single largest non-profit sponsoring housing for the psychiatrically disabled in South Carolina. Since 1990, MHASC and its affiliates have sponsored the following: 1990 Mental Health Association in Mid-Carolina Four 3 Bedroom Houses 12 units MHASC sponsors and manages this project 1991 Mental Health Association in Sumter Washington Place 20 units 1991 Mental Health Association in Orangeburg Enderly East 20 units 2008 Allen Hearth 12 units 1991 Mental Health Association in Greenville Victor Village 12 units 1993 Mental Health Association in Aiken Northgate Apartments 20 units 1994 Mental Health Association in Kershaw Chestnut Ferry Apartments 20 units 1997. Mental Health Association in SC KIVA 8 units The KIVA Lodge provides a group home for five residents with persistent severe mental illness. This group home provides structured independent living with medication monitoring, group and individual therapy, and ongoing support to ensure successful living in a community environment. The KIVA apartments provide eight residents with moderately supervised living with access to medication monitoring, individual support services and staff on call 24 hours per day. These two programs provide the clinical services needed to help someone prepare for the next stage of living in a community setting. The KIVA program is a partnership between the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, and the Columbia Area Mental Health Center.
